The earliest forms of jewelry can be traced back to the distant Stone Age. Primitive jewelry primarily took the form of necklaces, waist adornments, armlets, bracelets, and headpieces, with necklaces and waist adornments being the most common.
Necklaces: In ancient tribal societies, men would often tie a rope around a woman captured from another tribe, symbolizing their desire for her to become their wife. This practice eventually evolved into the use of necklaces. While the meaning of necklaces has changed over time, it still carries a similar sentiment. The necklace now symbolizes a desire to “hold on” to someone, representing love and connection.
Bracelets: In ancient times, early humans would wear animal teeth on their bodies, hands, and necks. This served two purposes: to disguise themselves as animals and confuse others, and to carry a weapon capable of inflicting harm. Over time, people realized that the more jewelry a person wore, the more animals they had hunted, showcasing their strength and skill. As a result, they began to wear vibrant, noticeable jewelry made from the fur and bones of the animals they had killed. These bracelets would often be engraved with images of mountains, stars, and moons, becoming a symbol of their abilities. Over time, bracelets and other accessories became representations of status, power, bravery, and intelligence.
Additionally, the word “bracelet” carries a phonetic resemblance to “guarding love,” symbolizing the connection between two hearts. A bracelet signifies companionship and mutual protection between two people.
Rings: Among all jewelry, rings are the most significant in representing love. The origins of the ring trace back to a simple iron band. According to Greek mythology, when Zeus discovered that Prometheus had stolen fire for humanity, he angrily chained him to a rock. After Prometheus was rescued, a permanent iron band remained around his finger, marking the early form of the ring. Today, rings symbolize deep love, representing the willingness to be “bound” for love. A ring is now considered one of the most direct and sincere expressions of affection.
